What is measured, improves; a well-known understanding amongst engineers. But does this also apply for pump shaft sealing solutions? The answer is yes. Getting grip on your process by monitoring the condition of a seal helps you to plan maintenance, stretch the MTBM1 to an optimum and improve the lifetime of a seal. It helps you avoid sudden pump failure, unnecessary maintenance and effectively lowers the operational costs.
The LIQUIDYNE lip seal, which is new to the Indian market, comes with the possibility to continuously monitor the seal condition and helps to increase the reliability of a pump.

LIQUIDYNE basic functions
Initially designed for heavy duty dredging pumps, the LIQUIDYNE seal is a water lubricated shaft seal. The seal exists out of independently operating modules, each fulfilling its own function. The basic functions of the LIQUIDYNE modules are: sealing, pressure reducing and dirt retention function. A fourth function is the vacuum module which can hold 8 Meters Water Column in idle (standstill) situation of the concerning pump. Furthermore the vacuum module will prevent air leakage through the seal into the pump chamber, when the pump chamber pressure in idle situation is lower than atmospheric pressure.

Working principle
The lip seal in the pressure reducing module runs on a bush with special helical grooves. These grooves and the peripheral velocity of the bush allow the water to flow from the flushing water supply to the flushing water discharge. This way, a hydrodynamic layer is built up which effectively lubricates the seal. The flow in the flushing water discharge serves as an indicator of the condition of the seal. Over time, the helical grooves on the bush gradually wear down. This way, a smaller amount of water will flow through the seal and the water discharge flow gradually decreases. A decrease in this flow indicates when maintenance should take place. This way,

maintenance can be planned and MTBM can be optimized: precautionary maintenance will no longer be needed.

MTBM
There is no standard MTBM. The MTBM may vary from several weeks or months (heavy duty dredging applications), 5 to 8 years (specific industrial applications) up to 20 years (drinking water applications).

Dutch and Indian Expertise Join Forces
The seal is brought to market by IHC Lagersmit, part of IHC Merwede. IHC Lagersmit delivers Excellence in Sealing Solutions in India, in close cooperation with CARBON ROTOFLUID. This way CARBON ROTOFLUID ensures specific, tailor made sealing solutions for the Indian market.

In short, the advantages of the LIQUIDYNE pump shaft seal:

  • Proven technology
  • Grip on maintenance through condition monitoring
  • Minimal loss of pump capacity through minimized frictional resistance
  • Stretched MTBM
  • Tailor made solutions
